What is Fair Trade Coffee?

Recently, we shared our thoughts about Ethically Sourced Coffee and Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Coffee Growing. One common theme you probably noticed is “fair trade.” What do we mean by this, and why is it important?

It’s all about the process. First, farmers receive agreeable prices for their product, and their farms and processes support environmental stewardship. They also contribute to the development of their local communities.

These beans have been produced to fair trade standards set by organizations dedicated to creating transparent, respectful partnerships for farmers. By following them, practices such as forced and child labor are eliminated.

What are the Benefits?

Supporting environmentally- and farmer-friendly growing methods is just one benefit of these policies. But what does this mean for the consumer?

1. Better Tasting Products

Organic, chemical-free growing and pressing means a better taste when it’s time to drink. You’ll find it’s healthier as well.

2. Fair Prices for the Consumer

Because these policies try to eliminate the middleman by encouraging buyers to work directly with the farmers, you may find that the price of your drinks will be lower.

3. Supporting Community Development

Unlike some large companies who take over the local culture, these producers frequently reinvest a portion of their revenue back into their community. This means more revenue for small businesses and efforts like employment, healthcare, women’s programs, education, and housing.

4. Growing Processes Maintain Biodiversity

When mass-produced coffee growers operate, they often use “sun-grown” plantations that involve stripping the rain forests of trees. In contrast, fair trade growers produce shade-grown plants that encourage the wildlife population, up to 95% more than larger competitors.
